Aidan and I got to the airport early today, largely because the Air Canada website won't allow you to do much of anything unless you actually bought your tickets directly from AC. I had used Travelocity because they came up with connections that the AC site didn't. Since the seats on the long flight today weren't selected for some reason and I couldn't print a boarding pass we went early. We got Aisle/Aisle across from each other. Jubilation followed. As did a Tim Horton's lunch at the airport with Dave, Ryan and the Schmidt grandparents. There were at least 3 school trips leaving the Saskatoon airport this morning as well.
We were up in the boarding lounge early. Unfortunately some little boy was very ill on the incoming flight, and the flight was delayed about half an hour so they could clean up puke. When the plane landed (late) in Toronto there were some crew waiting to switch out the two seats.
Aidan and I hustled through the Toronto airport and made it to our Rome boarding area about 5 minutes before the plane started boarding. As we went through the boarding line we discovered they had changed planes, and thus our seats (due to a different configuration) and Aidan ended up in the window seat the row behind me for the flight oversears. Well, that was actually my seat but I pulled rank and took Aidan's aisle seat. That flight left late because the computers in Pearson Airport were down and flight plans had to be physically carried through the terminals from one spot to another. We finally got our flight plan, and then entered it manually in the onboard computer, and then we left.
The flight though was good. Totally uneventful and good movies. I watched the Muppets, the Help, Hugo and the Descendants (I'm not good at sleeping on planes). Aidan (also not good at sleeping on planes) hop-scotched through an even longer list of selections.
Luckily our driver had kept in sync with the airline arrivals time, and was there waiting for us when we arrived close to two hours late in Rome. He was nice, spoke good English, the car was lovely - this being met by a driver is something I may have to try again! We got to the hotel in our lovely car, and checked in uneventfully. Well, we did have to mention that we had asked for a twin, not a double, and the maid separated the beds and remade them.
After a shower and fresh clothing made us feel fresher and better, we went out - and stopped within half a block for a limone gelato. It was super! And Aidan got to cross off one of the things on her "must do in Italy" list.
The next item on my "must do in Italy" list was to buy us both cheap cell phones so if one of us misplaces the other we can quickly find them. Following the suggestion of the hotel, we walked to the train station (unfortunately not by the most direct route - streets that are never staight or on the square make life more difficult). When we got to the front of the line to be served we discovered I needed my passport, which was cleverly locked in the safe in our hotel. On the way back to the hotel to pick up the passport we spotted a telephone store that was closer than the station, so shortened the next walk back to pick up the phone a little. Anyway, we do both have lovely cheap cellphones (costing 10 Euro less each that they would have at the station). So we are prepped for emergencies.
We also discovered a restaurant that Aidan wants to eat pasta at, and a grocery store directly across the street where we can buy pop for a third of the price as the hotel. So it was back to the hotel for a rest and internet break (and a drink of cheap pop) and we plan on going out for pasta next.
Tomorrow we'll be tourists. Our major tourist event today was driving past the Colloseum and Forum on the way to the hotel.
